The SRQ Media Studio hosted a powerhouse group of women from a variety of professions and backgrounds at the February 9 SkillSHARE Mentorship Summit. Women in Business Leadership Circle mentors along with community guest mentors exchanged experience-based guidance with participants in moving rounds of deep dive engagement and dialogue.

“SRQ Magazine was thrilled to host another incredible evening of connection, brainstorming and mentorship at the recent SkillSHARE. Filled with highly engaged professional women from a myriad of fields, the night was filled with connection, valuable insights and a wealth of ‘Aha moments,'” said Ashley Grant, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships for SRQ MEDIA.

Strategically paired with highly experienced mentors, participants sought counsel on everything from navigating various career paths and business expansion to maintaining a business and work life balance with four rounds of 15-minute concentrated mini-sessions designed to pick up where the small talk ends.

“As a young professional, I realize that the true benefit of mentorship is the opportunity to challenge your worldview and define what you want from your career and life. To be able to speak with and gain insight from a network of strong female leaders is a lifetime opportunity,” said SkillSHARE mentee Michelle Williams.

We couldn’t help but notice a spark in the room, which was undoubtedly the spirit of connection, collaboration and empowerment. Mentors and mentees alike so delighted in learning and engaging with each other that time was extended during each session to allow for more in-depth and insightful conversations.

“Growth happens when someone has the courage to tell you the truth – what you’re excelling at, where the opportunities are, and most importantly, what you need to stop doing. I’ve been privileged over the years to have many respected women hold up this truth-telling mirror up for me. I’m honored to do the same and help women continue to grow as leaders in business,” said SkillSHARE guest mentor Julie Henry.

“SRQ Skillshare was a unique night of connecting. The speed element of multiple mentees/mentors kept it fun and fast paced.  As a mentor, it not only felt good to give back, but some of the connections were great for me and exposed me to businesses in the area that I was not yet familiar. SRQ is excellent in finding fun ways to invest in the community,” said mentor Elizabeth Fisher of Selah Freedom

Last week, the team at SRQ Media experienced greatness in the form of SRQ SkillSHARE, our brand new speed mentor summit. If you know a little bit about our brand, you know that one of our biggest and most exciting programs is the Women in Business Initiative, which has grown from very humble roots into a multi-outlet platform that includes a competition, annual awards luncheon, private monthly gatherings of the WIB Leadership Circle and now SRQ SkillSHARE. We can’t contain our excitement about how the very first SkillSHARE played out.

“As a community catalyst, SRQMEDIA continues to break new ground in the art and science of local engagement,” says CEO and President Lisl Liang. “I love that SkillSHARE starts where small talk ends. We’re thrilled the SRQ Women in Business Initiative has created such a special place for dynamic women to take the deep dive! We invite you to SkillSHARE with us.”

On Thursday, February 18th, an experienced panel of mentors (comprised of members of the Leadership Circle and two guests) showed up to SRQ Studios bearing questions from participants that were hungry for answers, guidance, suggestions and general knowledge on how to work, live and lead in Sarasota. A week before, we poured over applications and were genuinely moved by the heartfelt questions sent in by applicants. Those questions are exactly what we used to determine the right fit for each participant.

Upon arrival, mentors and participants received packets containing a schedule of mini-sessions and eagerly awaited the chance to meet. For five rounds of mini-sessions, participants asked their questions, got great advice and networked with likeminded professionals of all ages. The SRQ Studios conference room was transformed into an area for participant conversation in between rounds.

We couldn’t help but notice a spark in the room, which was undoubtedly the spirit of connection, appreciation and witnessing growth in action. “This was by far the most efficient and effective networking event I’ve ever been to,” said Dr. Cynthia Clark of Longevity Wellness.

Participant Barbara Shore made a comment that stuck with us. “I was glad to see that you are never too old or too young to learn from others.” As our participants represented a cross-section of the workforce, we were thrilled that our mentors were able to lead and guide young women early in their career pursuits, those looking to make major changes in their lives and even women envisioning life after retirement. From balancing busy careers and young families to tactics on making the most impact with a multi-generational workforce, the mentors shared their wisdom and advice on how to make it work and how to make the best of the current situation.

SRQ Media would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the incredible mentors at the event. Leadership Circle members Angela Massaro-Fain, Grapevine Communications and Sandra Rios of The Resort at Longboat Key Club served as co-chairs for SRQ SkillSHARE. If you’d like to learn more about the incredible women that offered their guidance, visit the SRQ Women in Business website.

Women in Business Brings the Sparkle at Diamond Vault

Members of the SRQ Women in Business Leadership Circle visited Diamond Vault this week.

Members of the SRQ Women in Business Leadership Circle visited Diamond Vault this week.

This week, the dynamic women of the SRQ Women in Business Leadership Circle were treated to a rare experience, a behind the scenes tour at The Diamond Vault. After a champagne reception with appropriately themed diamond cookies from Sift Bakehouse, Leadership Circle members had their personal jewelry cleaned and were able to try on some of the Diamond Vault’s most stunning, sparkling rings, necklaces and bracelets that illuminate the shop’s jewelry cases.

As true lovers of behind the scenes experiences, the women were delighted to learn about the very detailed process of making and repairing delicate jewelry from Diamond Vault owner Michael Chokr and his jewelers. Demonstrating the science behind the sparkle, Leadership Circle members took turns using the laser welding machine to fuse screws, a process that requires precision but doesn’t use heat, making it the perfect technique when working with more delicate stones.

BIG NEWS: SRQ SkillSHARE is Coming Soon!

SRQ Media is thrilled to announce SRQ SkillSHARE on February 18, 2015.

SRQ Media and its Women in Business Initiative are thrilled to announce a brand new networking program,  SRQ SkillSHARE, on February 18, 2016.

One of the most fun parts about serving the local community is witnessing connection. Since we introduced our Women in Business Initiative several years ago, it has been incredible to watch it grow into a platform that connects people to each other and to our locally-focused brand. Each month, members of the Women in Business Leadership Circle gather for the Seaside Salon Series, held at The Resort at Longboat Key Club. In the conversations that have blossomed about leadership and developing and serving young women in the business, education and philanthropic organizations in our community, this group of dynamic women is ready to share their skills and smarts with the future leaders of the Gulf Coast.

On February 18 at 5 PM, we’ll introduce SRQ SkillSHARE, a speed mentorship program powered by the Women in Business initiative. Under the leadership of Women in Business Leadership Circle Delegates Angela Massaro-Fain (Grapevine Communications) and Sandra Rios (The Resort at Longboat Key Club), this event will cultivate the connection that SRQ Media thrives on.

What is SRQ SkillSHARE?

One of the major challenges that makes conventional mentorship so cumbersome is the commitment of time for the mentor and the mentee. Seasoned professionals in a particular field may have a lot to share with an eager protégé, but finding the time for a traditional mentor relationship isn’t always easy. For those looking for sage advice and guidance, finding the right person to rely on is easier said than done. And there’s so many other variables – what if a mentor relationship isn’t the right fit? What if you can’t commit to being available long-term but want to help out a young go-getter in a real way? Well, we thought about that. And we thought about the way we would want to be mentored in the speed of the digital age. That’s how SRQ SkillSHARE was born. And now, we’re so excited to watch it take on a life of its own.

How Does it Work?

Members of the Women in Business Leadership Circle have agreed to share their ideas, opinion, advice and ‘atta-girls’ with young female professionals at our studios on February 18th. Focusing on Professional Development, Management, Philanthropic Engagement and Entrepreneurship / Business Growth, they’ll be on standby to listen and to guide area professionals in all-things leadership.

How Can You Sign Up?

Participation will be limited, so signing up in advance is highly encouraged! SRQ Media will accept applications for participation through February 10 at SRQHearMeRoar.com. We’re asking each applicant to supply a few questions that will help us make an ideal match for the mini-sessions of mentorship with our very talented Leadership Circle members. Questions will be presented in advance to be sure that our mentors are sharp and quick with their responses, ensuring that everyone is able to make the most of each mini-session. To register, visit SRQHearMeRoar.com. Applications must be received by February 10th to qualify for participation.

What Should I Expect?

In addition to the application, expect to receive a packet of information when you arrive to SRQ Studios. Within the pages, you’ll learn the mentors you’re paired with for the evening. After a networking period, the whole group will jump right in and for mini-sessions that last up to 10 minutes. When signaled, the participants will switch to their next mentor, learning as much as possible from as many talented women as possible.

What If I Make a Great Connection?

Of course, we would love that. If a particular mentor-participant match is made in heaven and you’d like to connect beyond the speed session, the ball is in your court! Our role is to take make a targeted introduction and encourage a meeting of the minds between mentor and participant.

Get Ready!

Information about our incredible panel of mentors is available on the SRQ Women in Business website, SRQHearMeRoar.com. Applications are accepted through February 10th. Be sure to invite your friends to come and learn from the very best!

See you in February!

SRQ Women in Business: Lee-En Chung Shares Her Success in Construction

The SRQ Women in Business Leadership Circle meets each month for a breakfast at Sophie’s in Saks Fifth Avenue at the mall at University Town Center. All in attendance were thrilled that Pam Rotar from Lafayette 148 New York joined our discussion for a special announcement. On January 22, 2015 SRQ President and Editor in Chief Lisl Liang will interview Lafayette 148 New York Creative Director Edward Wilkerson as part of a special event showcasing upcoming collections. The event promises insight into his creative process, his inspiration for the designs of Lafayette 148 and a fashion presentation.

At each of our monthly gatherings, a member of the Leadership Circle shares their story of challenges they have met along the road to success. Lee-En Chung, P.E., Founder and Construction Consulting Engineer of Ivy Ventures engaged the Leadership Circle with her honest insights on the challenges and hard-earned accomplishments as a construction engineer. We can officially say that Lee-En has done it all. She has overcome tremendous obstacles; she is fiercely committed to achieving her goals and has the ability to light up a room with her sincerity and strength. We learned a lot about “sticking to your guns” and the power of believing in yourself from her story. And we consider ourselves privileged to count her among our friends at SRQ.

The morning wrapped up with one of those moments you wish you could duplicate at every gathering. A thoughtful, honest discussion unfolded on the importance of growing up with a mentor. Laurey Stryker articulated one of the most interesting things we’ve learned, “You get to a point in your life that you become your own mentor. As you teach others, you teach yourself.”

We are grateful for the members of the Leadership Circle who encourage and motivate us as they mentor and challenge themselves to make this community great.

Special thanks to Sophie’s at Saks Fifth Avenue at University Town Center and Lafayette 148 for their hospitality (and the delicious breakfast spread) and support of the SRQ Women in Business program.

If you would like to nominate an influential member of our community for the Women in Business competition, visit SRQ this January.

Lafayette 148 celebrates women: the inspiration behind their flawlessly designed fashion line and the focus of their new social media campaign, #WomenWeLove. The diverse personalities, stories, goals and styles of women are always in sharp focus as collections are designed for the sophisticated, modern woman and her multi-faceted lifestyle. As a partner of Saks Fifth Avenue’s Mall at University Town Center location, Lafayette 148 Southeast regional manager Pam Rotar learned of SRQ Magazine’s Women in Business program and immediately recognized the connection to the #WomenWeLove campaign. Not only did Pam join the monthly Women in Business discussion with an impressive presentation on Lafayette 148’s company structure and guiding principals, but she also brought along samples from the latest collection! Members of the Leadership Circle were photographed in their favorite pieces for an upcoming SRQ Magazine editorial project. “It was a pleasure to meet such an interesting group of women. I was so impressed by their successes. They are truly Women we Love! I am so pleased that SRQ magazine and Lafayette 148 have merged forces to support and mentor the women in business in the Sarasota community,” said Rotar.

SRQ Magazine is grateful to Saks Fifth Avenue for their sponsorship of the SRQ Magazine Women in Business program. And we are thrilled to make the connection with Lafayette 148 and the #WomenWeLove campaign through this relationship. Sally Schule of Saks Fifth Avenue echoes our sentiments, “Leave it to the SRQ Media team to identify and recognize the Sarasota Women of Influence. It has been a pleasure for Saks Fifth Avenue to unite the Lafayette 148 team with these ladies and hence create our own Women We Love campaign! It just shows Lafayette 148 is a line that fits all lifestyles and all sizes.”
