SRQ Welcomes The Fall Intern Class of 2016

Summer has come to an end and school is back in session, but our fall interns will not just be learning out of a textbook. They will be gaining hands-on professional experience with our transformative intern program. With focuses on advertising, marketing, photography and editorial, each intern will develop core knowledge and gain a deep understanding of their specific field of interest. Our fall internship program has brought us fresh faces from Ringling College of Art and Design, University of South Florida, State College of Florida and Venice High School. As an advocate of all things local, SRQ magazine strives to expose our interns to the tremendous cultural, business and educational assets in Sarasota and Bradenton so that they strongly consider making our region their home when they look for their next job.

Meet the newest interns working with the SRQ team this fall:

Thomas Schwarz, Editorial Associate. Thomas is currently a senior at the University of South Florida majoring in professional and technical communication. He is a man on a mission to effectively communicate and convey his message to a broad audience. Thomas’ dream job encompasses his passion for editing, writing and public relations. Thomas has a love for art, culture and 70s music, especially Pink Floyd and Jimmy Hendrix. His favorite activity outside the office is taking his dog Indie (a rescue from Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue) to Anna Maria Beach. He will be working closely with the editorial team creating content.

Taylor Young, Marketing and Editorial Associate. Taylor, a rising State College of Florida sophomore has always dreamed of working at a magazine and couldn’t wait to start learning the ropes at SRQ. She loves staying up to date on  the most current fashion trends and hopes to one day to do public relations for a fashion house in LA or New York. What inspires her most about fashion is that it is a form of expression. She will be working alongside Ashley Grant and Madeline Crotts on the SRQ Gives Back platform, and will assist Aviel Kanter with the magazine’s digital and print style sections.

Katlin Thompson, Marketing Associate. After receiving an associate’s degree from the State College of Florida, this Sarasota native is thrilled to intern at SRQ magazine and gain professional experience before finishing her degree in marketing and communication. When Katlin is not interning or working at a local clothing boutique, you can find her on North Lido enjoying the sun, riding her beach cruiser around St. Armands or petting every dog she sees at the local farmers market. She will be working with Madeline Crotts on the implementation of SRQ Media’s marketing, event and social media initiatives.

Diana Morales, Marketing and Editorial Associate. After graduating from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in editing, writing and media, Diana came back to her hometown longing for the beach and excited for new opportunities. Diana has a true passion for art, incorporating creativity and innovation with everything she does. During her time with SRQ this summer, Diana’s interested was peaked for our marketing and event planning programs. She has extended her internship through the fall and is excited to continue working alongside our dynamic team. She will be coordinating events and implementing marketing strategy alongside Ashley Ryan while continuing to tackle assignments for the editorial team.

Kevin Brandt, Photography Associate. Kevin is a senior at the Ringling College of Art and Design studying photography and imaging. After he graduates, Kevin hopes to find a job where he can travel the world and capture it through his camera lens. His favorite things to take photos of are landscape and wildlife. Kevin’s passion for nature stemmed from is upbringing in Stuttgart, a rural farm town in Germany. He will be gaining professional photo experience and collaborating with Wyatt Kostygan while interning this fall.

Morgan Bortz, Marketing Associate. Morgan is a Venice High senior planning on attending the University of Florida to earn a degree in business administration with a joint law degree. She is currently a leader in Community Youth Development, an organization dedicated to shaping today’s teens into successful business leaders and a driven board member of Sister Cities Association of Sarasota. She looks forward to giving back to the community, expanding her marketing knowledge and networking during her time at SRQ magazine. She will be assisting Jennifer Miller and Ashley Ryan with the special advertising opportunities.

Common Entrepreneurial Myths Debunked at Sept 22, SB2 Symposium on GOOD GROWTH

Yesterday, SRQ magazine hosted a well-received SB2: GOOD GROWTH Economic Indicators breakfast symposium at The Francis in downtown Sarasota. As guests filled their plates with a mouth-watering breakfast spread, series sponsor Lesley Hatfield of CS&L CPA’s welcomed those in attendance. As a locally grown business, giving back and supporting worthwhile initiatives are just as important to CS&L as their mission to provide the finest level of personal service and technical expertise.

Tammie Sweet,
Director of GrowFL gave a compelling presentation on the common myths of entrepreneurial ecosystems and what it takes to strive economically as a community. GrowFL helps local communities build entrepreneurial efforts centered on the Economic Gardening philosophy. This philosophy embraces strategies for second–stage companies in a community, region or state. “These are companies that have between 10-99 employees and 1 million to 50 million in revenue. They are hidden in the fabric of your community. We help them identify where new market potential may be as well as provide peer environments where they can get with other CEO’s of second–stage companies.” said Sweet.

  • Myth:   Ecosystems can be created and controlled by one organization
    Fact:    When targeting areas for entrepreneurship stimulation, clusters offer a fertile environment where survival rates are higher and performance better than elsewhere.
  • Myth  You  know that you have a strong entrepreneurship ecosystem when there are more and more start–ups
    Fact: For a booming economy, bet on high growth firms, not small business.
  • Myth Job creation is the primary objective of fostering and entrepreneurship ecosystem
    Fact: Job creation is a by-product, but it is not the objective.
  • Myth  In order to strengthen your regional entrepreneurship ecosystem, it is necessary to establish co–working spaces, incubators and the like
    Fact: These types of intentionally created support mechanisms are just a piece of the puzzle.
  • Myth  There is one one recipe for success
    Fact: There is no right way to do this. Try, fail and try again.

Tammie left us with impressive statistics on our region’s economy and job market stating that the Sarasota-Bradenton area was ranked 60th out of 381 cities across the United States for jobs gained in 2015 and 5th in Florida.

Between sips of coffee and bites of bacon, guests were able to hear from movers and shakers in the Sarasota-Bradenton economic community. Panelists hailed from a variety of organizations: Jeff Maultsby from the Sarasota County Government, Joan McGill from the Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County, Steve Queior from the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and Peter Straw from the Sarasota Manatee Manufacturers Association. Panelists were passionate about the current state of our economy, the value of education and the importance of a bi-county relationship.

Steve Queior, 
President and CEO of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce kicked off the conversation by explaining how significantly our economy has grown since The Great Recession. “We lost 38,000 jobs in The Great Recession and we have since gained them almost all the way back. One of our challenges is we have to create more higher paying jobs for the standard of living for our neighbors and residents.” Steve was also recognized for this 12 years at the helm of the Sarasota Chamber, a position he will be wrapping up this coming month.

“To achieve innovation, you have to disrupt your business. The Great Recession, disrupted every business in our community and we were fortunate enough to have leadership strong enough that said ‘hey if we get together we can find solutions to this’,” Peter Straw,  Executive Director of the Sarasota Manatee Manufacturers Association pointed out.

When asked about the recent decision to decision made by the county in regards to turning down incentives panelists were quick to share their thoughts.

“Florida is a much more business-friendly state than it was 8 years ago. The question is what kind of incentives do you offer and what kind of payback do you get for the incentives,” said Peter Straw.

Jeff Maultsby, Director of Economic and Business Development for Sarasota County argued, “When it comes to attracting businesses to our community, incentives are probably 4th or 5th on the list of things that are important to the company that is considering our community. First and foremost is talent. Where will I get my people? That is the number one question we get all day every day. It’s challenging for us to sometimes make that case to companies.”

Education and retention of young talent were on the forefront of conversation throughout the morning discussion. “Workforce is always an issue that companies struggle with at all levels whether it’s large or small. We are working very hard with our education institutions to create training programs that are specific,” Joan McGill, Vice President of Business Development for the Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County added.

“Education and training equals economic development, it equals career pathways for our young people and neighbors of all ages and we’re doing some good things in this area in education and training, ” said Steve Queior. 

 Jeff Maultsby closed the conversation by stating,”Winning for us is doing the greatest amount of good for the most amount of people in Sarasota county. The core principle of economic development is to raise the wealth of our community so if we can have that impact I think that’s a win for us.”

A 20–year veteran of economic development, Tammie holds numerous awards for her leadership in innovation and entrepreneurship. Meet Nicole Carbon, Contributing Writer.

Meet Nicole: After residing in Pennsylvania, South Florida, California and North Carolina, Nicole Carbon finally made her way back to Florida, and is happy to call beautiful Sarasota home. For over a decade she has been writing for both print and online media outlets about fabulous food, wine, cocktails, hotels, and other lifestyle-related finds. You may recognize Nicole from a few of her TV appearances on local NBC and Fox news affiliates as well as Cooking Channel’s Eat Street. As a self-proclaimed food connoisseur, Nicole admits to constantly getting star struck by local and celebrity chefs. She keeps a healthy balance in her life with regular Bikram yoga, meditation practices and by lacing up her running shoes. In her off time, you can find Nicole eating and drinking her way throughout the Gulf Coast and sharing her food finds.

Meet Michael Adno, Contributing Writer.

Meet Michael: Michael Adno is an avid artist and writer currently based in New York City. He is a first-generation American and a native to the Sarasota area. Michael ventured from Florida to the Big Apple to study at New York University and serves as a contributing editor for At Large magazineHis work has appeared in a number of publications including Oxford American and Autre and Huck magazines. His project Cracker Politics: The Limits of Colonial Knowledge has garnered numerous fellowships and awards for its unique historical undercurrents. Michael is continuously expanding his portfolio and is looking forward to a fellowship at Hermitage Artist Retreat in Englewood, FL later this year.

What Fun! SRQ Hosts Clients at Pies on Pineapple

While the days of childhood pizza parties are long behind us, we are usually looking for an excuse to get together with our clients. And some of us are always looking for a reason to eat pizza. On Wednesday August 12th, these lofty goals merged in the form of, “Pies on Pineapple,” the third installment of our quarterly client gatherings.

This year, we’ve had a great time celebrating the people and companies that make our community so special through SRQ Parties on Pineapple. Having them as clients makes us grateful and challenges us to deliver fresh ways to live local in every edition of SRQ | The Magazine. Parties on Pineapple have been a reminder to us that every now and then, we should hold the phones and have conversations that aren’t strictly focused on business, enjoy some delicious food and take a couple of hours to connect. We’ve enjoyed watching our family of clients make valuable connections to each other and develop stronger ties to the community.

The best part of a pie party is that there’s no rules. Dessert for dinner is encouraged. Pizza for your first and third courses (with an interlude of pie-inspired custard as your second) qualifies you as a culinary genius. Wearing a cowboy hat and faux mustache in the photo booth is appropriate pizza party behavior. Luckily for us, our clients seemed to remember the routine of a pizza party as fondly as we do.

Solorazano’s Pizzeria represented the savory side of pies with thin-crusted, New York style cheesy goodness. Their menu ranges from traditional, simple pies to hearty favorites like the Hoboken Heart Attack (topped with meatballs, pepperoni, sausage and bacon), to the Centrella (a white pizza generously prepared with onions, spinach, fresh tomatoes, garlic and basil). If you’re looking for something good for the soul, they’ve also got something special: the #PieItForwardMovement. Patrons with an appetite for giving can pay a little extra for their pizza and the good people at Solorazano’s use the money to make and deliver pizzas for the hungry in our community. If there’s anything better than pizza, it is surely pizza with a conscience.

The dessert section was something to behold. Gorgeous, handcrafted pies were made with an extra helping of love by Sift Bakehouse. A key lime cheesecake pie was the perfect balance of tart and sugary sweet, while the comforting flavor combo of peanut butter and jelly (using fresh berries) in the form of a pie weighed in as the crowd favorite. S’macks brought bite size samples of their famous custard. Brownie crust was swirled into salted caramel custard for a rich flavor combination to cool off and unwind at the end of a long day. For those interested in sipping a locally brewed beverage, Gold Coast Eagle Distributing supplied beers from Darwin’s Brewing Company – including Circa 1926, a tangerine wheat beer with a cult following.

In between sweet, savory and icy bites, guests posed in the Mojo Foto Booth and took home their own filmstrips to commemorate the evening’s fun.
