Hear Me Roar Leadership and Awards Luncheon Recap  | Thursday, May 2, 2019

SRQ MEDIA hosted the fifth annual Women In Business Hear Me Roar Leadership and Awards Luncheon on Thursday May 2, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota featuring nationally-recognized keynote speaker Geralyn Lucas, noted luminary Dorothy Butler Gilliam and the announcement of the winners of the 2019 Women in Business Competition.

After guests were treated to a morning of shopping at the Pop Up Boutique Lounge, the Hear Me Roar Luncheon began with a warm welcome from Steve Altier of Hear Me Roar Champion Partner Seaside National Bank & Trust Bank.

SRQ MEDIA was pleased to introduce Geralyn Lucas as this year’s Hear Me Roar Keynote Speaker. Lucas is the best-selling author of Why I Wore Lipstick: To My Mastectomy and an accomplished producer whose book was made into an Emmy nominated movie and inspired collaborations with Betsey Johnson and Stella cosmetics. In a compelling and inspiring keynote speech, which she aptly named “Finding my Roar,” the Hear Me Roar audience was brought to laughter and tears as Geralyn Lucas shared her journey of finding confidence and strength during her battle with breast cancer as a 27 year old. Encouraging attendees to “always take that risk,” Lucas emphasized the importance of making small but powerful differences. “When I wrote my book, I wanted to reach out to one woman and hold out my hand to her,” she remarked.

Next, SRQ MEDIA had the great pleasure of honoring legendary journalist, civil rights activist and the first female black reporter for the Washington Post, Dorothy Butler Gilliam. Gilliam was the recipient of the 2019 Women in Business Trailblazer Award. As an agent of social change, Gilliam’s story of overcoming the adversities of racism and sexism is impactful. Gilliam accepted the award on behalf of black women journalists and women of color who had lived their life with such remarkable courage. Gilliam recalled early civil rights activist and investigative journalist, Ida B. Wells as well as other women who helped pave a new path in journalism. Gilliam recently published a memoir, Trailblazer: A Pioneering Journalist’s Fight to Make the Media Look More Like America and has been widely acknowledged as a pioneer in her field, a champion of social justice, and a true Trailblazer.

Powered by SRQ’s Women In Business Initiative, the Hear Me Roar luncheon culminated with the announcement of the 2019 finalists and winners of the Women In Business Competition Awards Program. This year’s distinguished award nominees, finalists, and winners have made a meaningful and significant contribution to our region in business, education, philanthropy, arts and culture and healthcare. SRQ MEDIA is pleased to announce this year’s twelve inductees into the SRQ Women in Business Leadership Circle: The 2019 Women In Business Competition Winners Luz Corcuera, Johnette Isham, Terri Najmolhoda, Christine Robinson, and Sally Schule, and seven Women In Business Competition Finalists Lynn Hobeck Bates, Mireya Eavey, Ashley McCollum, Lisa Moore, Kay Rosaire, Renee Snyder, and Rachel West.  Congratulations!
